Step 6 of 11

Gifts in the 7 years before deathSchedule IHT403

Gifts made in the 7 years before death can use up the tax-free allowance. List every gift to a person or charity, and leave out gifts to a husband, wife or civil partner.

Did they give away money or property in the 7 years before they died?IHT403 box 1

Include cash, a share of a house, money to help someone buy a home, and premiums they paid on a life policy for someone else. You can leave out small gifts of £250 or less to any one person in a tax year.

These are free of tax, but they count when deciding whether the estate needs an IHT400 (IHTM06019).
